Chéri Samba - born in Congo in 1956 - is without doubt the most famous African painter of his generation. An ambassador for ‘popular painting’ in Kinshasa, he has made a major contribution to raising the profile of this informal movement with his figurative paintings in bold colours that challenge, denounce, caricature and provoke, usually with humour, in a style that is anything but naïve.
