Ratna Gupta, born in Chennai in 1979, is an accomplished sculptor based in Mumbai. Her work is known for its complex exploration of memory, repetition and the passage of time, using both organic and synthetic materials to create objects that resonate with both familiarity and strangeness.
Ratna Gupta's artistic practice is deeply personal and introspective, often reflecting the complexities and psycho-emotional contradictions of the human experience. Her sculptures frequently incorporate materials such as twigs, mushrooms, wood, stone, cement, resin and plastic. This mix of organic and industrial materials helps him to explore themes of ecological decay and the ephemeral nature of existence.
Gupta has exhibited his work extensively, both in India and abroad. Notable solo exhibitions include "Everything is Precious" at Sakshi Gallery in Mumbai and "This Will Last and One Must Not Forget" at Galerie Felix Frachon in Brussels. Her group exhibitions have taken place in prestigious venues such as the Delphina Foundation in London, Art Brussels and the India Art Fair in New Delhi.
Her work often moves away from direct figurative representation, adopting instead a conceptual and sculptural approach to depicting the human condition. By concentrating on repetition and the materiality of its supports, the artist's sculptural work is often seen as a means to an end.
